The Hidden Thoughts of God

Reading: Micah Chapter 4

By Pastor Alex

Now many nations     are assembled against you, saying, “Let her be defiled,     and let our eyes gaze upon Zion.” But they do not know     the thoughts of the Lord; they do not understand his plan,     that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor. Arise and thresh,     O daughter of Zion, for I will make your horn iron,     and I will make your hoofs bronze; you shall beat in pieces many peoples;     and shall devote[c] their gain to the Lord,     their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.

-Micah 4:11-13

In today’s reading, we see the dichotomy between the evil intents and plots of the nations (unbelieving peoples) and the sovereign plan, design, and thoughts of God. God ordains things, and God has the last say. God is not the author of human evil, yet He is able to take the brute evil of sinners and turn it around for good in His divine plan! We read that the nations had a plan – ‘Let’s go and defile the people of God!’ All the while, God had a plan to use Israel to execute judgment on the nations who were convinced they had the upper hand. Let’s never forget how our God judged Egypt. Pharaoh had a plan – to stop the Israelites from worshiping their God and to keep them in bondage, so he wouldn't lose his workforce. God had another plan – to demonstrate His power, patience, and greatness over all the false gods of Egypt, by using and even hardening Pharaoh’s evil heart. In every generation from then till now, His mighty deeds in Egypt have continually been retold, inspiring awe in our God.

In Jeremiah 1:5, The Lord says to the young prophet, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you….” Simply consider the implications of this one sentence from God by faith, and you see that the staggering 62 million abortions done in our nation are not mere "tissue" that has been removed, but defenseless human beings designed by God who have been slaughtered. There is a real genocide occurring in the U.S., aided by falsehood and empty reassurance being propagated by groups like Planned Parenthood, all to make a profit. We ought to be deeply grieved along with the Holy Spirit over such an overwhelming number of deaths in the name of convenience. Yet, we should never forget that God has the last say. In eternity with Jesus, I believe that we will see 62 million souls from the United States who never breathed a breath on earth but who are enjoying the embrace of the Father’s holy presence and friendship forever.

In the process of threshing, there is a redemptive purpose. Threshing is not only about destruction; it is more about separation. The grain that is usable and valuable gets separated from the chaff. The chaff is useless and is simply blown away by the wind. God will use His people to judge and scatter the chaff of the nations. But all the while, He is after the grain. Micah says about the kingdom of God, “the peoples shall flow to it, and many nations shall come, and say: ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths’” (vv. 1-2). In modern day, we know of nations where converting from Islam to Christianity can cost a person their life, and yet Muslims are having visions of Jesus Christ, and are running to Christians, asking to understand who this Jesus is.

Are there circumstances that are troubling you? Are there aspects of your life that seem to serve no purpose? Remember that all things are under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Be encouraged that, ultimately, all things will work together for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. There is nothing outside of your power that is outside of His.
