Lay Minister Jason Walsh
Born in Polson, Montana and later relocated to Tacoma, WA; God started a journey he would never have imagined.
His parents divorced when he was 5 years old and was then raised by his Father. Raised in a Christian home, attending a Christian Church every Sunday and a youth group on Wednesdays, Jason was unaware how somewhat dry and basic his Church was. They learned all the parables, lessons, stories and popular bible verses, but there was never a fire burning inside him for the Lord. He was under the impression that “this” was all there was when it came to being a Christian. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at the age of 10.
His Father was a High School Music Teacher thus, he grew up in a house full of music. He played the Saxophone grade 6 through 12 and every single sport. School came easy, music came easy, and so did sports. Out of every sport, basketball was the most challenging. So, he quit all sports and focused on that. He grew into a solid basketball player by High School and aspired to play in College. Since his Father was a teacher, he didn’t have the money to send him to college, so he and his brother decided to live with thier Mother, who relocated to CT, upon the agreement she would pay for college. He was very successful playing basketball in college. He worked hard, often practicing on his own for 2 hours after our daily team practices each day. He had an opportunity to play in a semi-pro league after 3 years of college, but soon decided after one season he couldn’t do that for the rest of his life. So, on January 11, 2004 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Graduating number 1 out of 96 at Boot Camp.
He served until October 11, 2013. He was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., Andrews Air Force Base, MD, Middletown, CT for recruiting duty, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, CA in San Diego, CA and deployed to Afghanistan for 7 months. He met President George Bush Jr, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, all the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Vice President. He worked with Secret Service, FBI, and NCIS on several missions. He worked with the CIA in Afghanistan and several other foreign Special Forces entities.
Through his almost 10-year Marine Corps career he had many highs and many lows. The lows were very low when he finally hit rock bottom. Dealing with depression, loneliness, and questions as to my true purpose in life. Through the years, he had fallen away and come back to the Lord so many times, it caused confusion more than anything else. He decided to get out of the Marine Corps. He had no idea what he was going to do. Life was empty, with no purpose and he felt as though he had little or no value left on earth. . He needed family and a sense of direction.
One morning, his brother, now Pastor Jeffrey Walsh, invited me to Brooklyn, NY. He had no idea what they were going to do there. When I asked, he would answer, “We are just going to watch.” He took me to Metro World Child ministries led by Pastor Bill Wilson, the largest Sunday School in the world, reaching over 140,000 kids per week worldwide. We entered an auditorium which was no more than a big room with bleachers on either side. As they sat alone and watched the staff members prepare his defining moment arrived!
As the staff members passed around the microphone praying, with music playing in the background, he heard the words of their prayers and lost complete control of his emotions and began weeping. All he could feel was being overwhelmed with how much God loved him and how much he didn’t deserve it. He wanted to give Jesus his life completely at that moment. He surrendered everything to Jesus that very second. He couldn’t stop crying and he felt the Holy Spirit move within him and has stayed there ever since. He was baptized when I was 10, but was truly sanctified by Jesus and washed clean in Brooklyn that day.
His brother and he returned to church that night and was showed a prayer book. This book contained prayer requests from 10 years ago, to present day. Each prayer with a “check mark” next to it, was a prayer answered and a “praise report.” Jeff pointed to Jason’s name. It read, “Pray for my brother Jason, for his salvation,” It was dated October 15, 2013 which was 2 days after he got out of the Marine Corps. He and his church had been praying for Jason from that date until April of this year when he was saved in Brooklyn, NY with his brother next to him. He had no idea anyone was praying for him. Jeff placed a “check mark” next to that prayer request, signifying an answered prayer that day!
Jason received his Local Minister License in the spring of 2017 and currently working with the Youth upon many other duties in the church. God has called him to pursue Ordination within the Church of the Nazarene. Jason is bi-vocational and works full time as a Business Developer for a staffing company called Express Employment Professionals. This often comes full circle as he meets people ministering who do not have jobs or are unemployed for a variety of reasons. The Lord has blessed him with a beautiful Christian wife, a daughter, a step son, and a baby boy “on the way!” All glory and honor goes to Jesus Christ!
